United Way Invites Community to Play in Art, History, STEM, and Spelling Competitions to Raise Money for Local Students

February 16, 2022

Lorain, Ohio – United Way of Greater Lorain County is recruiting teams of 3 to 5 adults for The Bee, a virtual event featuring history, art, and science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) competitions.

Gameplay during the preliminary and semifinals rounds will be pre-recorded starting March 14. The final round will take place live on the agency’s YouTube channel (@uwlorcty) on April 30 at 3pm.

“There are so many benefits from participating in this unique event – connect with friends, family and/or colleagues, learn a few things, and of course to help raise much needed funds to help local students with social-emotional skills,” said United Way’s marketing & engagement director Ashley Renee Hampson. “You can put yourself in back in the shoes of a student while having fun and giving back to our community!”

Team registration is $75 for a single competition or $225 to play in all four competitions. Individual competitions offer a $300 prize package for first place and teams that play in all four competitions will compete to win an additional $1000 cash prize. Teams are encouraged to crowdfund to earn additional advantages in the competition such as bonus points, hints, and extra time.

All proceeds from the event will be used to support the local United Way’s six community collaboratives focused on kindergarten readiness and middle school success as well as the agency’s Collect Sort Deliver Impact Initiative which distributes school supplies to communities throughout Lorain County.

“Our collective impact approach to supporting students brings a multitude of caring partners together to help kids inside and outside of the classroom, all in an aligned approach that helps students succeed in school and in life,” said United Way of Greater Lorain County’s president and CEO, Ryan Aroney. “The money raised from this event provides critical funding to maintain our commitment to local students who need the community’s support now more than ever.”

Team registration is open now through March 13. For more information about the event including sponsorship opportunities, visit uwloraincounty.org/thebee or call 440-277-6530.
